Pensionado vs Rentista: Which Costa Rica Residency Is Right for You?
If you have a lifetime pension of at least $1,000 USD a month, choose pensionado: it is cheaper to document, cheaper to hold, and simpler to renew. If your money comes from investments, rentals, a business or savings, you cannot use it as a pension and rentista is your route, at $2,500 a month guaranteed for two years or a bank deposit. Everything else about the two categories, the documents, the family coverage, the work restriction, the path to permanent residency, is the same. Here is the side-by-side, and the four cases where the choice is not obvious.

Who is clearly a pensionado
You receive, in your own name, one of these at $1,000 a month or more:
- U.S. Social Security (retirement or disability)
- Canada Pension Plan and/or Old Age Security
- A government, military or public-employee pension
- A private employer pension paid for life
- A lifetime annuity certified as such by the insurer
Apply as pensionado. It is the cheaper category to hold and the simpler one to document. Pensionado requirements.
Who is clearly a rentista
Your income is real and steady but it is not a pension:
- Dividends and interest from a brokerage account
- Rent from property you own abroad
- Distributions from a trust or a business
- Withdrawals from retirement savings (an IRA, 401(k) or RRSP is savings, not a pension, unless converted to a lifetime annuity)
- You have no monthly income but can fund a $60,000 deposit
Apply as rentista. Rentista requirements, including the legal note on the deposit.
The four cases where it is not obvious
1. A pension under $1,000 plus other income. A $700 Social Security benefit does not make you a pensionado, and adding $500 of dividends does not help: the pensionado category counts only the pension. You are a rentista if the total stable income reaches $2,500, or a pensionado once the pension reaches $1,000.
2. Two spouses, two pensions. If each spouse receives $1,000 or more, each can file as a principal pensionado, and each holds residency in their own right, which matters if one dies or the marriage ends. If only one reaches $1,000, that spouse is the principal and the other is a dependent; there is no combining.
3. Early retiree with a large portfolio, no pension yet. Rentista now, on a CPA certification of $2,500 a month from the portfolio or a bank deposit. When Social Security starts, you can change category, or simply wait for permanent residency at year three, after which the income requirement disappears.
4. Remote worker with a salary. Neither. Salary from remote work is remuneration, not a pension and not passive income in the rentista sense (though some CPAs will certify it). The purpose-built route is the digital nomad permit, with rentista as the choice when you want a path to permanent residency.
The cost difference over three years
Government fees are identical. The difference is CAJA, which is assessed on the income you declared to Migración.
| Item | Pensionado at $1,000 | Rentista at $2,500 |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly CAJA (2026 bands) | ≈$100 | ≈$344 |
| Three years to permanent residency | ≈$3,600 | ≈$12,400 |
A pensionado who declares a $2,500 pension pays the same as a rentista; the difference is the minimum each category allows you to declare. Bands and the calculation are in the cost guide.
The renewal difference
Both renew every two years with proof of uninterrupted CAJA enrollment. The rentista adds two bank certifications (Reglamento art. 227): that the income continues, and that the $2,500 actually entered Costa Rica by monthly transfer when it comes from abroad. Pensionados no longer have to re-prove the pension at renewal since a 2023 amendment removed that requirement. If you are a rentista, open a Costa Rican bank account on approval and route the income through it from month one.
After three years, the question disappears
Both categories qualify for permanent residency after three consecutive years of temporary residency. Permanent residency has no income requirement and no work restriction. Choose the category you can document cleanly today; you will not carry the choice for long.

Questions
Questions, answered plainly.
What is the difference between pensionado and rentista in Costa Rica?
The source and amount of income. Pensionado requires a pension that is paid for life, of at least $1,000 per month. Rentista requires any stable income of at least $2,500 per month guaranteed for two years, or a bank deposit that produces it. Both are two-year temporary residencies that cover a spouse and children under 25, restrict paid employment, and lead to permanent residency after three years.
Is pensionado or rentista cheaper?
Pensionado. Government fees are identical, but CAJA contributions are based on the income you declared, so a pensionado at $1,000 pays about $100 a month and a rentista at $2,500 pays about $344. Over the three years before permanent residency that is roughly $8,800 more for the rentista. Rentista also usually costs more to document.
Can I qualify as a pensionado with Social Security?
Yes, if your monthly benefit is at least $1,000. Social Security is a lifetime pension and its Benefit Verification Letter is the standard proof.
Can a couple combine two pensions to reach $1,000?
No. The $1,000 must be one person's pension. If neither spouse alone receives $1,000, the couple looks at rentista, where family income may be combined to reach the $2,500.
Can I switch from rentista to pensionado later?
Yes, by a change-of-category application ($200 fee) once you receive a qualifying pension. Most people do not bother: after three years either category converts to permanent residency, which has no income requirement.
Which is faster, pensionado or rentista?
About the same at Migración: six to twelve months to approval for both in 2026. Rentista often takes longer before filing, because a bank letter with the exact required wording or a CPA certification takes weeks to obtain.
